Petersfield Community Care

Petersfield History

Petersfield was founded in the early 12th century and is a corruption of the words Stn Peter’s feld; the word feld simply meaning any open area without trees.

In the early 12th century a church was built on a feld which was dedicated to St Peter. The surrounding area then became known as St Peter’s feld.

The Earl of Gloucester who owned the land, started a market by St Peter’s Church.  The Petersfield Market is still alive and thriving within the Petersfield town square.
